The inaugural reboot of MPT (Metro Poker Tournament, FKA Mini Poker Tournament) was held on May 1, 2026, and included a bunch of people who’d never met each other. By the end of the evening, however, I believe everybody knew all the names. More importantly, everybody seemed comfortable enough to give grief to other players and not-so-gently urge them to “go all in” and “take him down!”. We were able to squeeze in 3 games in about 5 hours.

The self-described “poker rookie”, Jeff E even came armed with sunglasses, like you see on the WSOP videos on YouTube. He also finished 2nd in two of the games, forcing me to wonder if his first bluff (“I’m the rookie”) happened before the cards were ever dealt.

Hopefully in future events we’ll be able to spread the wealth more than we did on this evening, in which 3 people landed in the money in multiple games, including Erik M, who took 1st in two of the three games. The committee will meet to determine whether he’s invited back 🙂

The Best Actor award has to go to Josh F, who hemmed and hawed over his hand against Ian E. For a while it felt like his dog just died as he labored on the flop, turn, and river. The flop showed 2 jacks, and by the time the river betting was over, Josh was finally all-in and called, at which point he flipped over his pocket jacks. Quads on the flop. Well played, but we now know, when Josh is struggling to decide, look out.

Thanks to everyone for making it a great event! Hopefully everybody had a good time and will return for the next event (depending on schedules, maybe mid June?) We’ll introduce a “host fee” at that and future events, a modest $2 charge (per night, not per game) to help defray the cost of cards, effort to set up, clean up, etc.
